Cultural Mapping on Shanghai’s Iconic Facade: Rebirth vol.2 of Ukrainian Spirit
A powerful fusion of culture and multimedia — Naos Studio’s “Rebirth” projection mapping illuminated one of Shanghai’s most iconic cultural facades at Shenyuli, a historic Shanghai neighborhood, during the Shining Shanghai Light Art Festival 2025, celebrating resilience, heritage, and the timeless beauty of Ukrainian identity through multimedia art and light.

Project Introduction
For the 2025 edition of Shining Shanghai (Jing’an) International Light Art Festival, themed “Luminescent Roots: Stories of Home,” Naos Studio was selected among the top 10 international finalists to present its light-based art installation in the historical Shenyuli district — one of Shanghai’s most culturally symbolic architectural complexes. Over 2.6 million visitors witnessed our multimedia projection “Rebirth,” a reimagined interpretation of Ukrainian cultural identity through digital art and light.
Solution
Concept&Story of the show `Rebirth´
Through the language of light, motion, and symbolism, every frame told a story of roots, renewal, and creative strength.
Rooted in the idea of rebirth and cultural endurance, the piece explored the unbreakable spirit of Ukraine, visualizing how national identity continues to grow and transform despite adversity. Special attention was given to the architectural rhythm of the Shenyuli facade — we integrated contour lighting, reflective textures, and synchronized light waves that breathed with the structure itself.
Technology & Creation Process
The mapping was developed with a hybrid workflow combining Cinema 4D, Houdini, and After Effects, supported by complex particle simulations, compositing, and real-time light integration. As a personal signature, the library scene subtly featured the portraits of our core design team — a gesture of unity and authorship within the artwork
AI-Driven Concept Development
At the foundation of Rebirth stood an AI-assisted creative process, where visual experimentation became a core part of multimedia concept design. Using Midjourney, Nanbanana, and Luma AI, the team explored hundreds of generative prompts to define the emotional vector and motion dynamics of each scene.
These tools allowed rapid ideation and visual refinement, helping to translate cultural symbols into modern visual metaphors. AI generation became not just a reference pipeline but a creative catalyst — enabling Naos Studio to achieve fast, cohesive, and visually consistent concept development for large-scale projection mapping and immersive storytelling. By merging human direction with machine imagination, the team established a new workflow standard for multimedia concepting, where art, technology, and culture evolve together.
Storyboard for Projection Mapping Show
Character animation and environment design were central: we reinterpreted traditional Ukrainian embroidery patterns, weaving them into dynamic light geometries; drew inspiration from folk costumes and Cossack warriors, and merged them into a collective image of female creative energy and cultural guardianship.

From Concept to Cinematic Precision
The centerpiece, a 3×3-meter physical-digital hybrid co-created by Naos Studio and Leva Studio, visualized the integration of the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar plants into Qatar’s national grid and LNG network. This fifth-generation mock-up combined lighting, LED screens, detailed printing, and structural precision — a masterpiece of multimedia engineering that made Qatar’s clean-energy vision tangible.
Characters
Each character in Rebirth was crafted through a detailed 3D character design pipeline, combining digital sculpture, texturing, and cinematic lighting to achieve realism within projection mapping constraints.
The Seeker — Symbol of Connection and Discovery
The Seeker opens the Rebirth narrative as the embodiment of curiosity and transformation a bridge between technology and emotion. Dressed in deep blue with a subtle question symbol on his garment, he represents humanity’s eternal search for meaning and the invisible thread connecting generations and cultures. In the context of projection mapping and multimedia storytelling, the character acts as a digital guide, awakening the architectural surface with waves of energy and light.
The Homeland — Feminine Archetype of Ukrainian Culture
The Homeland represents the feminine core of Ukrainian identity — a source of creation, protection, and resilience. Inspired by traditional embroidery and folk attire, she transforms national heritage into living digital art through 3D character design and projection mapping. Her luminous presence symbolizes a culture that endures and renews itself, merging Ukrainian roots, multimedia storytelling, and modern visual language into one iconic figure.
The Bandurist — Symbol of Creative Power and Memory
The Bandurist, holding the ancient Ukrainian string instrument bandura, stands as the guardian of collective memory and artistic courage. His figure emerges through waves of light and sound, transforming music into visual rhythm. This character represents the power of creativity as resistance — the ability of art to preserve identity through centuries. Rendered with fluid CGI effects and acoustic-inspired motion, the Bandurist embodies multimedia storytelling where sound, symbolism, and national spirit merge into one poetic expression.
The Cossacks and Ancient Stone Figures — Symbols of Strength and Authenticity
In the culmination of the narrative, monumental Cossack silhouettes and ancient stone idols rise from the facade — symbols of power, endurance, and cultural authenticity. Their stone textures and sculptural forms were digitally reconstructed using Cinema 4D and Houdini, creating the illusion of living monuments awakening through light. The rhythmic drumming and visual tremors emphasize unity, courage, and the ancestral force that protects identity. These figures connect the past with the present, transforming architectural space into a living tribute to Ukrainian strength and freedom.

Result
For three weeks, the mapping illuminated Shanghai, engaging audiences with its fusion of art, culture, and multimedia innovation. By adapting its signature author project “Rebirth” to the festival’s theme “Luminescent Roots,” Naos Studio demonstrated how immersive storytelling and projection mapping can translate heritage into universal visual language — connecting people, places, and emotions through light.
